Is it normal for a Great Dane puppy, while teething, to bleed a lot?

As soon as he started teething, my Great Dane puppy's mouth is always bleeding from around the teeth. And it's a lot and pretty much constant. This morning my puppy lost the bottom little sharp tooth. I gave him ice to try to stop the bleeding because it wouldn't stop for a while and it did help. I've noticed that the other breeds of puppies I've either had or been around have never bleed like my Great Dane is. I've tried searching for the information, but without any luck. My Vet was closed today and will be closed tomorrow too. :(

Is it normal for a Great Dane puppy, while teething, to bleed a lot?
Yes its quite normal! I have an american pitbull puppy. His teeth also bleed or i find his teeth on the floor just give him lots of toys to chew on from hard to soft plushy. I will stop bleeding after awhile. puppys are like babys everything in their mouths.
Reply:I own a 4month old Great Dane, and I've never seen her bleed like that... This is the first time for me to own one so I'm not for sure what's normal or not.
Reply:Did you have your puppy's ears cropped? If not then you probably havent had him tested for von Willebrands disease. It's a bleeding disorder similar to hemophelia. It keeps their blood from clotting. I would take him and have him tested for future knowledge. Otherwise There's not alot you can do about the gums bleeding while teething. I would def. consult your vet about vWD though it can be a serious problem and if it is what is causing your puppy to bleed like that i would def find out as much as i can and make arrangements in case there is an emergency.

With that being said. If he does have it, its not the end of the world. A HUGE percentage of the doberman population has it and most are perfectly healthy. The only thing it REALLY effects are surguries and in emergency situations. Def have him checked though it could save his life someday.
Reply:A little bleeding is normal, but this sounds like a possible problem. Are his gums a normal color (pink, not pale or red)? Do they appear to be swollen or receding from the teeth? Is he chewing more than other puppies you've had, and what is he chewing?

Until you can get in touch with the vet, I would try making sure that all his toys are smooth, such as Kongs or even tug toys, and not things like rawhide chews, just in case he's getting overenthusiastic with them.

I would definitely give the vet a call once they're open, since bleeding can be a symptom of anemia (iron deficiency) or an infection. I'm sure everything will be fine until you can call, though. :)
Reply:That is normal and healthy. It's like your teeth bleeding when you floss. It's a sign of gingivitis and the chewing helps to remove particles around the gum line and strengthen the gums.
Reply:Soak a clean washcloth in water, then tie it in a knot, and freeze it. When he seems like he needs to chew, this will make his mouth feel better, and should also soak up some of the blood so it's not on your floor, clothes, furniture, etc. The cold will also help close some of the vessels that are bleeding. Clean and reuse as needed.

I wouldn't worry about if it's just "seeping". If it's heavier than that, you should take him into your vet to get checked out when they reopen.
