My Puppy Broke His Front Tooth In Half -?

Hello, I have a five month old chow lab mix named Huckleberry. Today I noticed that his top left tooth is broken. The sharp 1/2 is gone %26amp; the rest of the tooth is still in his gums . . I can see that it is dying due to the dark color in the root. I dont have much money or I would take him to the vet right away.. I was wondering if anybody knew about when puppys lose their teeth . . is this normal? If it is not normal will it just fall out by itself? Should I pull out the rest of the tooth with plyers? I could take him to the vet but it would really hurt me financially . . .but if I need to I will of course. Just thought I would run it by everyone first in case this isn't a big deal. Thank you for all your help! 10 points to the best answer tomorrow

My Puppy Broke His Front Tooth In Half -?
It is time for him to lose his teeth. He will be growing a new tooth in a week or two.

Puppies begin getting adult teeth at 4 months.

You might need to smooth it with an emery board so he doesn't cut himself with the sharp tooth.
Reply:You still need to go to the vet, it could be an adult tooth. The canine teeth (the large sharp teeth) are one of the first baby teeth to go. If the tooth gets infected, the puppy could die if not treated due to bacteria in the blood. I'm a veterinary technician, I know what I am talking about.. Report It

Reply:Also if you broke your tooth, would you not go to the dentist? I'm sure it would hurt a lot, you probably couldn't even eat. Why subject your puppy to that? Reminder that he will still eat b/c survival of the fittest, won't show pain, but he will be in a lot of pain. Report It

Reply:Dont worry! all puppys lose their baby teeth just like us.the rest will probably fall off soon. It is painless
Reply:the tooth that he broke is the puppy tooth ? if it is, then leave it lor, sooner or later it will drop completly.if adult tooth, then better bring to vet to seek advice. my shih tzu had her puppy tooths and adult tooths grown together! so,instead of 4 sharp tooths ,she got 8 ...LOL.. the vet said must do surgery but i bought my dog those hard type of bone to chew.... and those puppy tooths are gone :)... if your dog tooth are puupy's, then maybe u can try this cheap method. cheers!
Reply:Puppy's get there adult teeth around 6mo of age. Keep an eye on him to make sure he is eating. If the broken tooth affects his eating you need to get him to the vet right away. Watch what your puppy is chewing on as this is how most of em break teeth.
Reply:well, not sure when puppies loose their baby teeth, but if it is a baby tooth then it will come out on its own and this adult tooth will replace it. if it was his adult tooth and it comes out then he will be without a tooth there for the rest of his life. i personally would not take plyers to it(shudder!!!!) as this could be very painful for the pup and being his dad you would not want him to be affraid of you. try calling around to local vets and explaining the situation and see if they offer pro bono(free exams/treatment) or if they offer any kind of reduced fees for people who cant afford veterinary treatments for their pets. my vet has a fund that people who can afford it contribute to towards treatment of pets of people who cant. try as many as you can and pick the best that will work for you. i would suggest taking him in if you can and at least have the vet look at it and make any suggestions. you may not need any further treatment for him? the vet may suggest letting the tooth come out by itself? the tooth may just be traumatized from what ever injury broke it, and it may be possible that the tooth just needs to recover for a time and will hold out. this would be better than him having no tooth there.

check with a vet though.

or go on to, just answer.com and ask the question there and it might cost $5 or so but they have animals experts that can give you a much more accurate answer and better advice. good luck to you and your snaggle toothed pup.
Reply:Watch it for swelling or any obvious sign of infection, but these things happen and your dog should be fine.

Reply:Well they start losing teeth at 4-6 months of age. If it is a baby tooth then it will fall out on its own, but if its an adult tooth then you must go to the vet. Sounds like its the canine tooth, which is very important to the structure of the jaw since the root runs deep into the jaw and is also very long. The vet will either suggest doing a root canal or removing the tooth. The root canal is the best option because the jaw won't lose any stability. You definitely need to see the vet, if the tooth gets infected the bacteria will find their way into the bloodstream and may cause more harm. Plus the puppy is in a lot of pain. Anyone who has broken a tooth will know that its very painful.
Reply:Most dogs have their adult teeth all in at around seven months of age. If this was an adult tooth then it should rot and disappear on it's own and it shouldn't bother the dog. My dog broke one of her canines and the vet told me that as long as it didn't seem to be bothering her then there was no need to pull it.
Reply:Get a tack hammer, and carefully chip out the tooth on the other side of your puppy's mouth. Aestheticly speaking, Try to make it look the same as the other side. Then, since you are broke, coat the exposed roots with some crazy glue or some permanent bondo. You'll be set, and the dog is stupid anyway. He'll be fine.
