Why is my six week puppy vomiting afther eating new food?

my puppy use to eat soft food but the vet told me to start putting out hard food to build up his teeth.

( it's puppy chow)

Why is my six week puppy vomiting afther eating new food?
If you switch over a dog's food too quickly, it upsets their stomach while they are trying to get used to it. I would give him his old food for 2-3 days until he's better, then gradually start mixing in the new stuff, adding more each day, until he is switched completely over to the new food. That way, it isn't such a big change to the puppy's digestive system all at once. I tried this on my own puppy and it worked perfectly.

EDIT:

In contradiction to what pugbug said, you should not feed him chicken and rice. The food he was on before might have contained lamb, and switching from lamb to chicken will probably make his condition even worse. You can use beef and rice, because for some reason, the switch between either lamb and beef or chicken and beef does not seem to affect dogs negatively. So you can either give him his old food, or give him a rice/beef mix...you can look up recepies on the internet because there is a certain amount you should give according to the dog's weight. The vet can also provide you with the recepie/amount for your dog.
Reply:1). It is too young to be away from its mother.

2). It could be sick, take it to the vet.

3). You may be feeding a low quality food, which could certainly cause it.
Reply:Six weeks???? Where's his mom? He's too little!
Reply:6 weeks is still to young to be away from its mom an siblings.. Try a different kind of food didn't you ask the breeder what food they was on so you could feed them that or mix a little with there new food? Did your vet recommend a food to feed the puppy?
Reply:Please tell me this puppy is still with its mother and siblings! It is too young to be away from its family. Did you switch to a different food? If he is not used to it, it could upset his stomach.
Reply:He may not like it or most likely its the dramatic change in food. he must not be used to it yet. Good luck.
Reply:if you changed the food suddenly he could be having trouble adjusting to the new food. you should always switch foods slowly. i'm assuming the reason you have this one so young is because he was orphaned? if the vomiting continues through today i would make another vet visit for a check up to make sure there isn't something else going on.
Reply:maybe its just something in the dog food. it happened to my dog too. you just have to experiment when looking for the right dog food. your dog could have an allergie toward something in the dog food its eating now. some dogs, like humans, are picky eaters! lol!

PS- also, another way to help build up it's teeth (if you still cant find the right dog food) is to give it some bones to chew on. you can alsi get a dog toy and play tug-a-war with it. best of luck!
Reply:My 6 week old puppy is on hard food too. She vomits when she over eats and when she plays hard after eating. Good Luck
Reply:Six weeks seems a bit young for hard food ... it seems too early to be away from the mother. But if you're switching from soft food, you need to have a mix of soft and hard for about a week - otherwise, your puppy will puke ... we did this to ours. Our vet suggested a diet of rice and chicken to calm the digestive track until the puppy quit puking. After that, a gradual mix of soft and hard over a period of about a week should make for an easier transition. Oh, our puppy also ended up with liquid bowels in addition to the puking. She's fine now and on puppy size hard food. Also, after the transition, I would add a bit of warm water to the hard food for a while.
Reply:ok the food is most likely herting its stomaxch change the food to royal cnine food which is really good for or i love solide gold wolf pup it is a really nnice brand also make the food your self it is a good way to keep your dog healthy
Reply:Okay. 6 Weeks old is the 'Earliest' you can aquire a puppy. Even though it is so young you need to find out it's previous history. By this I mean did you get it from a friend? Did they get its shots? If you recieved the puppy from a pet store or the humane society did they have any papers on this puppy? Also if it was in a kennel area with other dogs then it may have caught a sickness such as: Kennel cough, Worms and most commonly Parvo ( not to scare you), but Provo can be taken care of with treatment, but you need to act now and also worms can kill. There are so many little things that could be going on with such a small body. I honestly can not beleive that your vet told you to put your puppy on hard food! The puppy is still in the teething process. Puppies are just like babies, I think that you should get a second opinion from a different vet and put the puppy back on soft food, and when it's tummy looks like it doing better put a few peices of hard food in the soft batch and see if he will eat it. (Also make sure that the food is for your puppy's age range and weight... just because it is puppy food does not mean it is for your puppy) You should get a second opinion. I really, truely hope that he gets better.
