Chihuahua puppy question?

im having problems with my chihuahua puppy with her always biting and nipping me. Whatever i do doesnt work.

i've been told that when she bites me i tell her NO! in a stern voice she does stop but only for like 2 seconds and then continues. And i dont want to spank her cuz that will makes things worse cuz that makes her afraid of me and also cuz last time i spanked her it just made her more agressive so i stopped doing that. And i dont know that she is doing that because she is teething or just agressive. BTW she is 3 months old. please help me!! she has sharp teeth.

Chihuahua puppy question?
Be firm. show her 'im the boss' and hold her down on her back or belly with your hand and keep doing it until she calms her self but dont pay any attention to her while you are doing it. If that doesnt work try getting her a hard chew toy, since she is a small dog, maybe those mini tennis balls. Good luck with her!
Reply:she's 3 months? no wonder, she's teething. when all dogs are puppies their teeth is itchy and need something hard to bite on. give her a hard bone.
Reply:Have you tried redirecting the chewing???? When she nips or wants to bite you give her a toy to chew on. Telling her no when she bites then proceed to redirect that to a toy. Hopefully soon enough she will get the hint that biting mom is not a good thing.

Hope this helps

Good luck
Reply:Get her lots of chew toys and encourage her to play with those. When she bites you, say NO, and then ignore her. She'll eventually learn that she won't get attention if she bites.
Reply:what u do is when she bites u say NO in a stern voice like ur doing and then ignore her for a period of time say about 10 minutes. dont even acknowledge that she is there. if she tries to get u to play just walk away. she needs to learn that if she wants ur attention she cant bite u
Reply:The chihuahua puppy is not only teething, but also is a very playful dog. They are known to be playful by nipping and bitting but gently. If it gets rougher then you might as well get him of her a chew toy. I learned this from having about 11 chihuahuas at one time. Hope it helps.
Reply:All puppies bite and nip, it's totally normal puppy behavior, some breeds/individual pups bite more than others though. It's annoying and painful, and just because it's normal it doesn't mean that you should put up with it. Although it hurts now, it will hurt much more if an adult dog (of any size/breed) does the same thing, so you definitely want to stop it as soon as possible.

Just saying "NO" doesn't work with the majority of puppies. This nipping and mouthing is attention seeking/dominant behavior. Whenever your pup starts biting at you, say "No" firmly and then immediately withdraw your attention from her. Stop whatever interaction is going on (petting, playing etc.), cross your arms, avoid eye contact and ignore her for a couple of minutes. You can walk away or even leave the room if you have to. Repeat this EVERY time she starts to bite. Puppies learn through association and you need her to associate her biting with the loss of your attention and any fun that's going on.

There's a product sold in most pet stores called Bitter Apple spray. Puppies and dogs usually hate the taste. Spray it on your hands, arms, sleeves, pant legs etc. and she'll be less inclined to chew on them once she tastes it.

You're absolutely right when you say spanking (or a really loud aggressive voice, or any kind of physical/harsh punishment) doesn't work. Puppies often bite out of excitement, and when you confront them with aggression it only raises the level of excitement and makes them more combative and likely to bite harder. Always stay firm but calm, it works much better.

Give this treatment at least 2 weeks of consistent, patient effort and you should see an improvement in her behavior. Try to keep the general excitement level in the home down and don't ever play rough with her, play tug-of-war games or get loud and 'squealy' it will make her want to bite.

If you still need some more help after that, check out the webpage below for the next step. Puppies also tend to bite more when they're teething, and this generally tapers off when all their permanent teeth are through and they start to mature. During this time make sure she has tons of safe, sturdy chew toys to play with, the chewing helps sore gums and lets her take her excitement out on her toys instead of your hands.

A Kong toy, stuffed with peanut butter and frozen over night, or the Chilly-bones (cotton covered bone toys that you can freeze) are both good for teething puppies.

Best of luck with your little girl!
Reply:I have 4 right now in the 3-4 mo age bracket...all teething and nipping, I give them a firm tap on the side of their muzzle, with just one finger, to get their attention and tell them "no bite:...usually this is when they are all on my lap and need to settle down. Within a few minutes, they settle and pile together and fall asleep and take a nap. Does your chi settled down for you? It is a good thing to instill what "quiet time" is for them too when being held. If playing, as others have suggested continue to redirect her nipping...it is just teething at this point. do you belong to any chihuahua groups to help you with these types of problems? If not try chihuahuachips yahoo group.
Reply:in that puppy age there teeth get very itchy as there adult teeth are growing so maybe buy her a rubber toy or doggy bone to bite on?

anywhos good luck :D
Reply:I am having the same problem! My chi is 3 months old and bites when he is hyper.. which is very often! He has also picked up on with growling when he plays aggressively. When he does this i put him in his crate and leaving him alone for about 5-10 minutes. This usually makes him bark but when I take him out his is much calmer.. I hope everything works out for you because I am going through the exact frustration!
