My dog hates the new puppy...help please?

Our other dog died in October, making our Chi the only dog. We finally decided to get another dog becuase...one dog just didn't seem normal. So, we got a new Havanese puppy. She's very nice, and she's not overly hyper at all.....but my Chihuahua hates her. He'll go up to her to sniff her, but if she goes up to him he tries to bite her. If he's on the couch while she's running about, he'll leave her alone. But if he decides that he wants to walk around, that means I better get the puppy out of his way!

I'm having some trouble understanding why he dislikes the puppy so much. He loves my aunt's Shih-tzu and even snuggles up next to her for a nap sometimes, though, she's 14 years old and has no teeth. LOL

My dog hates the new puppy...help please?
could be fear based aggression, or maybe your not taking control of them enough, gotta be a pack leader. seems like she is the pack leader and is showing the puppy she is boss, not you.
Reply:We experienced similar with the introduction of a new puppy a mini schnauzer to our 4 y-o bishon.

The bischon hated the puppy - wouldn't look at him or go near him and when puppy did, he would growl and snap.

This went on for a few days and every day we just gave positive praise for every little thing our bishon did that was good so that he understood he is still the top dog.

A week on, they play like a house on fire. It'll take a bit of time and patience - ensure that your eldest dog is reassured as the top dog.
Reply:I have a chihuahua and she hates my pug. Maybe she's mad because your spending more time with your havanese try to give the same feeling to both of them. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
Reply:he is just trying to show who is boss give him some time and hopefully he will come around. do not show to much favoritism for the new pup. they are like kids they get jealous
Reply:Please don't be angry with your Chi...He's only jealous that the puppy gets more attention that he does...What you have to remember is that he's been #1 for a while now and now you've brought this cute little baby into the house that is getting more attention than him...You need to treat him like you would a child and give him just as much, if not more, attention than you do the new puppy...Not only will he feel just as important as he always has, but the new puppy will get the idea that there is a pecking order that is already established...:-)
Reply:That is sad that your dog died so did mine maybe your treating the new puppy better than your old one
Reply:give them some time this a new thing for the dog and puppy let them get to no each other more
Reply:Monitor your dogs so that the puppy doesn't bother the chi and the older dog doesn't attack the pup. You want both dogs to have good experiences when they are together. Your older dog is setting boundaries and hopefully the puppy is understanding them. It's not about pack leader rubbish.

When the dogs are together break out super good little treats and work on obedience commands. Praise and reward the older dog for letting the pup close to him. Give them time and help them to practice the behaviors you want.
