Bad breath on our puppy?

our puppy is 5 months old and is teething, but he hasn't got puppy breath its putrid breath. its not a blood smell associated with teething! the wife is a dental nurse and has had a look in his mouth there are no bad teeth or problematic teeth, but a small lump towards the rear, is this a salivary gland and if this is blocked would it smell? the smell could only be described as a pooey/puss smell (he doesn't eat his poo!)

Reply:Have that lump checked out. It sounds like it may be an infected mass. Touch it- be a little rough- does he seem VERY sensitive to it?
Reply:Lump towards the rear?? Not very much help. Take the poor dog to the vet and get him diagnosed properly. He might be experiencing a whole lot of pain..If your wife is a dental nurse, she would know better than most people that infection in the mouth is very dangerous.. Why would you neglect the dog, knowing supposedly what could happen.. And ask here.. where people know very little.. Especially when your description is so vague ..
Reply:I would have the lump checked out. If the vet says it's nothing then you may want to start brushing your dog's teeth. Starting at an early age will get them used to it and they'll do fine after a while. But definitely get that lump checked out first.

Reply:Sometimes dogs can get bad breath if they manage to eat food designed for humans, so stop feeding him off your plate if that is something you do, and get the lump looked at.
Reply:The only way to get the lump checked out is to have a vet look at it.





That said a common cause of bad breath in puppies (especially the type of breath that you describe) would be a worm burden. All puppies need worming monthly till six months of age. I would try treating him with a good licensed wormer from your veterinarian - not a pet shop/supermarket proprietary brand and see if there is any improvement.

Reply:most of the time when u have a inside dog they tend to not express there anal glands when they go poop, so there for they will lick there rear to express that..its a very fowl odor and if not expressed it could cause a abscess. one thing you can do for that is feed your dog canned pumpkin that acts as a fiber for what ever your dog may need do this once a week, you will also need to express the anal sac...you can do this 90% of the time without having to enter into the anas, you will get a double paper towl and sqeeze your dogs butt hole and milk out...It does sound nasty i know. or you can get a glove and stick index finger into anas with thumb where you can sqeeze helping index finger at 4 oclock and 8 oclock you will fill pea size lumps at both 4 and 8 oclock postions you will then milk them until empty. if your stomack is not strong enough for that take pet to your local vet and ask for the anal sac expression. its around 20 dollars most of the time. as far as the lump your seein on his neck or back of throat. thats normal the larger breed the larger gland your dog will have. and too case u wanted to know im a vet tech.. please email me with the results mandyfoster41980@yahoo.com
Reply:We dealt with the same thing...and we also brought our little guy to the vet and sure enough, just teething. And I hear you on the putrid smell...it's disgusting!





Come to think of it, it was right about the 5 month mark as well.





He's 6 months old now and no issues!
