Help with puppy problem.?

We just got a puppy about two months ago and my cat is now about 9 months old. When we first got the puppy the cat was bigger and would chase the puppy around and bite him or hold him down and lick his head and the puppy did not like this. Well the puppy is bigger than our cat now and when they play I think he is being too rough, he will grab the cat under his chin with his teeth and shake his head. The cat has a few scabs on his neck, but our cat still chases him and the dog is usually the one who yelps but he can get the kitty pretty good. How to I train him to be nicer to the cat, usually when he is being too rough I use a firm voice and say "NO, Be nice", but I don't want to train them not to play? I hope this isn't too confusing! Thanks.

Help with puppy problem.?
You can use a spray bottle and an easy command, when the pup gets too rough you can say No easy then seperate for 5 mins. He needs to be playing with other pups as littermates teach a pup how much pressure to use. If a pup bites too hard on his littermate the littermate goes YELP and walks away refusing to play. Was your pup taken from his litter b4 8 weeks? Over rough play is one of the signs.
Reply:Cats and dogs don't play together naturally. The fact that the puppy is breaking the cat's skin is not a good sign -- depending upon what kind of puppy, eventually he's going to get to a size where just playing roughly will inflict major (if not fatal) injuries.

I would separate them when they start to play, rather than trying to teach them how to play nice.
Reply:Put a muzzle on him every time he opens his mouth to the kitty. Once the cat is bigger %26amp; wiser the problem will fix itself
Reply:I think the cat will smack the dog if he's too rough. Cats have a way of training dogs.
Reply:You should have taught the cat to be nice to him first.. By not correcting the cat, you allowed him to think that fighting with the cat is fine. Why should he be nice to the cat when you didn't stop the cat from jumping on him?

Generally tho cats will let the dog know when they are being too rough. Might take longer tho since you have allowed them to wrestle and fight.
Reply:Well, I thought I would comment on this because I watched Dog Whisperer last night and there was a dog that would go crazy and try to attack a cat.

From what I saw, the best thing to do would be to keep the dog and cat seperate from eachother and have them in a calm state. When the dog looks aggressive, or tries to go towards the cat, correct him with either a quick touch (not hit) and a noise to let him know that you are in command and he cannot go after the cat. It may take a while, but it is something you can try.

Hope this helps.

Reply:When possible, don't let them be together. This could end up badly for both animals. When you are at home, keep an eye on them, and stop them when they start playing. It may seem like playing now, but once one gets seriously injured, it won't.

When you are out of your house, try to keep them separated, as that will at least make it so they won't get in a bad fight when you aren't there to break it up.
