How do you introduce a puppy to your other dog?

We have a 4 yr. old german shepard that we love. She was getting bored though as the kids started school so we decided to get a 6 wk. old puppy (lab/shepard mix) for her to play with. When they are outside they seem to play with each other and have fun. Inside our older dog is growling and baring her teeth at the puppy because the puppy wants to constantly play, while our older dog wants to be left alone to some extent. Our older dog is especially upset by any attention my husband shows the puppy as he is her alpha male. ALso sometimes our older dog seems somewhat afraid to go near the puppy indoors, which seems odd since she is a lot bigger and stronger than this little puppy. any hints at how to help this situation?

Actually your older dog is doing everything right. She's not beating up on the puppy, she plays with it when she feels like it, and she's warning it when she doesn't want to play and not fighting with it or trying to hurt it. She may be avoiding it indoors just because she doesn't want to play. She sounds like she's being really tolerant of the interloper, but just keep a close eye on them for a while. The pup will figure it out sooner or later.
Reply:just leave t5hem alone together for a bit and see how they get along.
Reply:Very slowly and carefully, because some dogs just can't get along with each other from the first moment.
Reply:I've been going through this myself...I have a 12 1/2 year old lab and just introduced a 8 week (Now 11 week) old Australian Shepherd.

All I can say is give it time. If they're getting along outside, that's a good sign. Make sure they're always supervised when they're together and if the older dog shows aggression, tell him no.

Also, make sure the older dog is getting "Special" attention apart from the puppy. Give it a special treat, or take it for a nice long walk without the puppy in tow.

It's been almost 4 weeks since I brought the little one home and my 2 are getting along fine now.
Reply:since puppy was taken from its littermates and mother too early - it has missed out on very important socializing -- so when your adult dogs tries to let it know it doesn;t want to play - the pup doesn't understand ( because it was removed from its mom etc. too early) just monitor them and make sure the pup isn't pestering the adult too much... they will grow to be good friends i am sure
Reply:put them together!

good luck!
Reply:When I introduced my older Golden to my yonger one, i put the younger one in an enclosed area with thise folding gate like things. After a while, the older was comming up to the edge of the encloser and the two were touching noses and batting at eachother's paws. Then I took the little one out of it's area, and the two immidiatly got along. Remember to watch the whole prosses, incase something goes wrong, and be sure to give the older lots of individual attention. Good Luck!!
