Devil Puppy?

On Friday we got an 8 week old Puggle puppy, Zoe. I already have a 3 yr old, docile, sweet toy poodle, Niko. As of right now, Zoe has been nothing but destructive. She attacks Niko, growls, shows teeth and at one point made him cry. I am completely besides myself. This to me does not seem like typical puppy behavior.

Devil Puppy?
Did you let your new puppy settle down without the older dog around? You should keep them seperated at least until you know how they feel about each other. They will get along but it takes time for them to get used to each other.
Reply:At first, i thought it was just playing,

but when i read that it made him cry,

that's a little weird. Zoe might be a little

dominant. She might want to be the only

dog or pet in the house. If this continues,

you might need to reconsider having 2 dogs.
Reply:Puppies are very active and need TRAINING!

This said, if you bought her from a "breeder" you made a mistake. Breeders that breed "puggles, pomapoos, maltipoos, labradoodles etc etc" don't care about temperament! They only care about making money. Unfortunately you might have gotten a mutt with a bad temperament. Good luck and get her to puppy class ASAP.
Reply:Some dogs are aggressive, you should watch the Dog Wisperer, hes awesome and helping with aggressive dogs.
Reply:Bad mix...Not gonna change... Puppy gotta go
Reply:Well, being destructive is typical puppy behavior. But not liking other dogs and being agressive isn't. (Are you sure she's just not playing too rough with your other dog?)

The breeder probably wasn't one of the best if the puppy is showing agression signs. No breeder who really cares about dogs is going to breed mixes, no matter what they say. "Designer dogs" go for lots of money, and that's the attraction to breeding them.
Reply:I feel it's a result of irresponsible breeding, which is something that comes along with a mixed breed. No good breeder would ever intentionally mix breeds, and it's very unfortunate that this puppy has possible behavioral problems. It may just be puppy behavior, and as she gets older, she may outgrow it, but it's possible she just isn't good with other dogs, or small dogs.

Did you get to meet both parents of your puppy? Did you talk to the breeder in person? Did the parents have good temperaments? Were the puppies socialized with other dogs, kids, adults, other animals, etc.?

I recommend you get her into obedience classes once she's old enough, and possibly ask a behaviorist or trainer to come in and evaluate her and her interactions with Niko and help decide what is best.

It wouldn't be fair to Niko if you kept Zoe when she always attacks him.
Reply:Good manners need to be taught. That is your job. Did you research Puggle Puppies before you bought one? That would be normal behavior for a high energy type of dog.

Learn how to reprimand the pup in a positive way. Aggression will make it worse so pick your methods wisely.
Reply:Did you meet the parent dogs? If so, what were they like?

How did this puppy act around her littermates?

What do you do when your puppy acts this way toward your other dog?

How did you introduce the two?

One thing to keep in mind, is that your puppy has puppy energy, which does not match your docile 3 year old's personality.

I suggest you crate train the puppy when you can't supervise.

I also suggest that you get a puppy kong and fill it with goodies to give your pup something allowable to bite and chew on.

Puppies growl, show teeth, and their teeth hurt! This is most likely "normal" puppy behavior.

How close are these two in size/weight?

Play with your puppy often. Do NOT play tug! If a dog wins the majority of tug games, it can increase the risk of dominance. Make sure you do not play tug with this puppy!

Also, when feeding your dogs, feed the 3 year old first, and have the puppy on leash and do not feed him until the 3 year old is done. This will help to place the 3 year old higher than the puppy, and will help to gain him the respect he should get.

I love the name Niko, by the way!
Reply:Zoe has already discovered she is dominant over Niko and that will be the case if Niko doesn't stand his ground. They will sort themselves out in time, but the bigger worry is if you don't take leadership of Zoe. She will rule all of you as she grows up and your lives will be a misery. This is typical puppy behaviour but it is your responsiblity to train her. Bringing up a puppy and making a good job of it is a massive task so search the web for sound advice or better still find a trainer if you are unsure of what to do.
Reply:The first thin you need to do is show her whos boss. (YOU) Do not let her sit on your lap right now till she gets that understanding. When you feed her tell her to sit and stay for about 30 sec then say OK, this is telling her "Oh that persons incontrol of me food." then maybe get a shock colar and shock her anytime she is showing agressive behavior.

My puppy is now starting fights with my other dogs at dinner time. Shes telling them that she in controland she wants the food. DO NOT ALLOW ANY BAD BEHAVIOR.
Reply:Some dogs are not used to other dogs being around them and get extremely angry at them for taking their space or toys or anything like that. Try playing with them both at the same time, if Zoe attacks Niko, take Zoe away and put her somewhere else and just play with Niko. Do that a lot, see if Zoe realizes that when she does that she won't get to have fun or get any attention.
