My 5 week old puppy thinks I'm a chew toy, and wants to suck everyones ear lobes. How do I get him to stop?

He is an orphaned pup who I have been hand raising for a little over 3 1/2 weeks. His teeth have finally come in and now he goes after your toes, heels, fingers etc... He has become the family baby, and we love him dearly, it's really hard to be stern with him because he has been throught alot. He also sucks on peoples ear lobes. Is this a behavior that will dissappear when he gets older, or is it a habit that we have to break? He is not left alone during the day while everyone is at work or school, we have a puppy sitter who also adopted one of my puppies littermates. Her puppy does the ear lobe sucking thing too. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ok, a puppy does not suck on ear lobes thinking they will give him milk - that is just crazy !

the reason they are suckling is because they were away from there mom too young. you said they were orphaned, so that would lead to this. you need to continue to let them nurse a few more weeks.....

the suckling is natural. I had a cat and a puppy before that did this and when i went to the vets, I asked them about it, and they said its because they were taken away too young

and yes they will probably do this for a very long time, if not for the rest of there life (my cat did it and he was 15 when he passed away and was still doing it)..

As far as the chewing and going after toes. All puppies chew - he is teething.. you need to go buy him some chew toys, like a rubberized bone or some pigs ears - do not get rawhide..

puppies are just like human babies, you need to teach them as you would a small child or infant.

He is only 5 weeks, so I would use a dog crate and use time out as a form of dicipline for behaviors that you want to break him of.once again he is only 5 weeks - you have a long road ahead of you in teaching and discipline
Reply:One more time. A young dog teeths just like human babies do. Give them something to chew on.
Reply:my dog still sucks my ears. he thinks they will give milk!
Reply:You need to correct him when you don't want for him to chew on something. But then substitute a chew toy so that they learn to understand what is acceptable.
Reply:get him a chew toy
Reply:ALL puppies do this! :) (I LOVE puppies!) he will grow out of it. ALL my dogs did this when they were younger. Good job on raising him! He is teething! He probably thinks that earlobes feel like his bottle.
Reply:You guys should have a lot of play dates with these two puppies. They learn that their behavior is not ok from other dogs. What usually happens when a puppy starts teething is that the mother will bark at the offending puppy and not let them nurse for a little while (minutes). It's this action that the puppy understands and it understands that it is not ok. When the puppies play together, they also learn what hurts. The puppy will bite another, the hurt puppy yelps and stops playing with the offending puppy. The offending puppy then makes the realization that biting means no playing. You should be the same way. When he starts to bite yelp (higher pitch) and walk away.

As for the ear lobe thing, he'll get over it. It's his way of trying to nurse. Just redirect his attention to something else when he does it.
Reply:the bestthing is a stern no and grab of tip pf nose in hand .and then give the pup what you want him too have not what it wants !! if you dont break this could just be sign of worse habits to come !! just remember a stern no is better than a stern hand if this dosnt work a simple flip on the nose lightly is always a wake up but not hard you dont want to hurt just a skock value ! they learn very quickly to stop if that dosnt work get a small soad bottle and put some rocks or change in it and ahske it everytime once again shock value !!
Reply:each time he goes to chew you or goes near your ears tell him to sit and reward him with a chew toy or treat. you must be consistant so he understands that he cant do that to people.
